CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent systems throughout San Francisco, with most full ridge vent replacements running between $850 and $1,800 installed, depending on ridge length and roof access. We can typically get your vent swapped within two to three business days once we’ve measured the ridge and confirmed the profile. Most San Francisco homeowners discover their ridge vent has failed after a hot spell, when attic temperatures climb and the upstairs rooms stay warm no matter how long the A/C runs, or after a windy stretch when they hear a rattle along the peak at night.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed’s ridge vent line splits between roll-style vents like the ShingleVent II and the lower-profile FilterVent, plus baffled options in their RidgeMaster series. The ShingleVent II is the one we see on most San Francisco re-roofs, it’s a polypropylene mesh roll that sits under a cap shingle and lets air escape along the full ridge. FilterVent is the same idea but with an external baffle fabric that handles wind-driven rain better, which matters here because the west side of the city gets real spray during the wet months. The compatibility gotcha: CertainTeed changed the ShingleVent II profile slightly around 2019, so the roll width and nail line on older installations don’t always match a new roll from the supply house. We match the vent to the ridge cut, not to the shingle color, and when a homeowner has an older profile, we often recommend a full ridge re-cut rather than a patch job that will open up at the seams. We’re an independent installer, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we stock their venting alongside GAF and Owens Corning equivalents so we can match what’s already on your roof.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic heat you can feel through the ceiling. The ridge vent has collapsed under the cap shingle or been blocked by debris. Air is supposed to draw up and out continuously, not sit in the attic and bleed into the living space.
- A rattle or flapping sound at the roof peak on windy days. The vent mesh has pulled loose from the nail line, or a section of cap shingle has lifted. This is more common on San Francisco’s hill-facing roofs where the wind hits the ridge at an angle.
- Water staining on the ceiling near the center of the house. Not always a roof leak. If the ridge vent’s internal baffle has torn or the roll wasn’t lapped correctly, rain can sneak in at the peak while the field shingles stay dry.
- Mold smell in the attic during the damp season. A blocked or undersized ridge vent traps moisture from showers and cooking. San Francisco’s fog-heavy months make this worse, because outside air is already wet and the attic never truly dries out.
- The vent roll is visible through the cap shingle. UV breakdown and years of heat cycling shrink the plastic mesh, and it starts to curl or show at the ridge line. At that point the vent is moving air poorly and needs replacement, not a re-nail.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Francisco, a standard CertainTeed ridge vent installation on a single ridge of 30 to 50 linear feet runs $850 to $1,800 installed for a full replacement with new cap shingles. The spread is driven by ridge length, roof pitch, how many stories of scaffolding or ladder work is involved, and whether we need to re-cut the ridge slot because the original decking gap was too narrow. The price is written down before any work begins, and it does not move at the door. What’s included: remove the old vent and cap shingles, inspect the ridge decking, re-cut the slot if needed, install the new CertainTeed vent to manufacturer spec, install new cap shingles over it, and clean up every scrap and nail. The work falls under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, for one full year. If the vent fails within that period, we come back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself from the ground or from a ladder: look at the ridge line and see if the cap shingles are lifted or the vent mesh is showing. You can also go into the attic on a bright day and look for light coming through the peak slot, which tells you the vent path is at least partially open. What you should not do is walk a San Francisco roof without fall protection and experience. Ridge work means working at the highest point of the house, often on a slope, and a fall from even a one-story roof changes your life. Beyond the safety risk, the reason most DIY ridge vent jobs fail within a season is that the ridge slot wasn’t cut wide enough or the vent wasn’t nailed straight along the line. That’s a ventilation problem nobody notices until the attic is baking in July. We’ll come out, look at the vent, tell you if it actually needs replacing or if it just needs a re-nail, and put a price in writing before any work starts. Call (831) 318-8819 and describe what you’re seeing up there.
FAQs
A properly installed CertainTeed ridge vent lasts 12 to 20 years in San Francisco’s climate, though marine fog and constant UV on the west side can cut the plastic mesh short to around 10 to 12 years. The cap shingles typically fail before the vent itself, which is why we check both on every estimate. Call (831) 318-8819 to have us evaluate what’s actually aged out on your ridge.
Sometimes a vent can be re-nailed or a single torn section lapped and sealed, but if the mesh has shrunk or the baffle is deteriorated, repair buys you a season, not a decade. We’ll tell you straight if the vent can hold or if replacement is the honest answer, and the price goes on paper before any work starts. Call (831) 318-8819 for a straight read on your vent.
Most single-ridge CertainTeed ridge vent replacements in San Francisco take four to six hours on site from setup to cleanup. Steep pitches, long ridges, or multiple peaks can push that to a full day. We do not start until you have a written price, and the crew leaves the roof clean when they come down.
We keep ShingleVent II and FilterVent rolls in common widths on our installation trucks so a standard San Francisco roof doesn’t need a second trip for parts. For older or less common CertainTeed profiles, we order from our local supplier and are typically installing within a few days. Call (831) 318-8819 to confirm what’s on hand for your roof’s specific profile.

If your CertainTeed ridge vent needs attention, call (831) 318-8819 for a free estimate. Travis grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, learned roofing through East Los Angeles College’s construction technology program, and has been reading San Francisco roofs long enough to know what a fog-fed attic does to plastic venting. A good roof shouldn’t need to be talked about, it should just hold. If yours isn’t holding, we’ll put the fix in writing and stand behind it for a year.
