Boral Shingle Repair: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
Boral shingle repair in San Francisco typically runs $425 to $1,100 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment beneath them is still sound. We stock Boral-compatible shingles on our trucks and can match most Boral profiles same-week. Most San Francisco homeowners discover they need this repair after a windy night near the ocean, when they find broken shingle pieces in the yard or gutters, or notice a ceiling stain that wasn’t there before the last storm.
Boral shingles are concrete or composite, not asphalt. That matters because they don’t flex the way asphalt does. When one cracks or shifts, it usually means water has been working on the underlayment for a while, or the fastener failed in San Francisco’s salt air. Either way, the fix is never just cosmetic. Travis Oakley will tell you the same thing he tells every San Francisco customer: a shingle that’s visibly broken has already been letting water through for longer than you’d like.
Which Boral Models This Applies To
We repair the full Boral shingle lineup, but the most common profiles we see on San Francisco roofs are the Boral Country Slate, Country Shake, and CedarLite series. These carry different dimensions and different nail-line spacing, so matching the exact profile matters more than most homeowners expect. A Country Shake shingle is not interchangeable with a Country Slate shingle, even if they look similar from the curb.
How to identify what you have: check the underside of any loose shingle for a molded code, or look at the original paperwork if the roof was installed in the last 15 years. Boral stamps a series identifier on most shingles. If you can’t find it, take a clear photo of the shingle face and edge profile and we can identify it from that. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Boral concrete shingles are still available through select distributors, but certain colors and profiles, especially in the Country Slate line, have become harder to source in the Bay Area. Where an exact OEM replacement isn’t available, we use aftermarket shingles that match the profile, thickness, and color range. We’ll always tell you which one you’re getting and why before we put it on the roof.

Signs Your Boral Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Cracked or broken shingle corners. Boral shingles are rigid. A crack near a corner almost always started at a fastener point. Water gets in through that crack and heads straight for the decking.
- Shingle pieces in the gutters or downspouts. If you’re finding concrete or composite fragments, the shingles above them are already compromised. In San Francisco’s wind corridors, like the Sunset or Richmond districts, one broken shingle often means several have been worked loose by repeated gusts.
- Staining on the ceiling or in the attic. By the time you see this, water has traveled through the shingle, through the underlayment, and into the decking. The shingle may look fine from the ground, but it’s not.
- Visible gaps or shifted shingles. Boral shingles don’t curl like asphalt. If you see one sitting out of line, the fastener has failed or the shingle itself is broken under the surface. Salt air near the coast accelerates this.
- Granule-like dust in gutters. That dust is the wearing surface of the shingle breaking down. It means the shingle body is aging past its useful life and will need replacement sooner than later.
One thing to understand about Boral shingles in San Francisco: fog is a bigger enemy than rain. The marine layer keeps roofs damp for months at a time, and that constant moisture works on fasteners and underlayment even when it’s not actively raining. A shingle that separates during dry weather is usually telling you the underlayment below has already thinned out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a single shingle or small area, expect $425 to $700. A larger repair involving 10 or more shingles, new underlayment, or a section replacement typically lands between $700 and $1,100. The range depends on three things: how many shingles need to be pulled, whether the underlayment can be saved or must be sectioned in, and how difficult the roof access is. San Francisco access is its own cost factor. A steep Victorian near Alamo Square takes longer to work safely than a walkable flat section in the Mission.
| Repair Scope | Installed Price Range (San Francisco) |
|---|---|
| 1 – 3 shingles, no underlayment work | $425 – $700 |
| 4 – 10 shingles, spot underlayment | $600 – $900 |
| Section replacement (10+ shingles, new underlayment) | $900 – $1,100 |
Every quote is a written line-item price before any work starts. You’ll see the shingle cost, the underlayment cost, the labor, and the disposal. The number on that paper is the number you pay, no add-ons at the door. We back every Boral repair with the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground: visible cracks, missing shingles, pieces in the gutter, or daylight showing through the roof edge. You should not walk a Boral roof. These shingles are rigid and load-bearing, but stepping on the wrong spot can crack a shingle that was perfectly fine before you put your boot on it. And working on a pitched San Francisco roof without fall protection is how people get seriously hurt.
Also know that removing and replacing a Boral shingle isn’t like swapping an asphalt tab. These shingles interlock and often require access to the course below to get the fastener out cleanly. If you break one mid-removal, you now have two to replace. Honestly, if you’re reading this page, you probably already know the answer. Call us at (831) 318-8819 and we’ll take a look.
FAQs
Boral shingles can last 40 to 50 years or more in drier climates, but in San Francisco’s fog belt, expect 30 to 40 years before significant repair or replacement, and sooner if the underlayment was poorly installed. The shingle itself is durable. It’s the fasteners and underlayment that age faster in constant dampness. Call (831) 318-8819 for a free inspection if your roof is nearing that range.
A single cracked or broken Boral shingle can be replaced individually in most cases, as long as the surrounding shingles and underlayment are still sound. If several shingles in the same area are failing, that’s a sign of a larger problem under the surface and a section replacement becomes the honest fix. We’ll tell you which one you need, with the price on paper before we start.
Most single-shingle or small-area Boral repairs take two to four hours on site, including setup, replacement, and cleanup.
We stock common Boral profiles and colors on our service trucks, including Country Slate and Country Shake, and we source special-order colors through our local distributors. You never need to order shingles yourself. If we don’t have your exact match on the truck, we’ll get it and return to complete the repair within the week. Call (831) 318-8819 to confirm your profile and color before we come out.
