Tamko Shingle Repair: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in San Francisco typically runs $425 – $1,150 installed, depending on how many shingles failed, whether the underlayment underneath is still sound, and how steep or cut-up the roof section is. We carry Tamko-compatible shingles and accessories on the truck, so a standard repair is usually a single visit. Most San Francisco homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a shingle slides out of place during a winter windstorm, a patch curls so badly you can see the fiberglass mat underneath, or a small leak shows up on the ceiling after a week of fog and drizzle.
Tamko makes a solid shingle. But like every asphalt shingle, it has a lifespan, and San Francisco’s fog, salt air, and steep pitch combinations beat on roofs harder than most people expect. A loose or cracked Tamko shingle is not a roof replacement. It is a repair, and done right, it should blend in and hold for years.
Brennan Roofing Co San Francisco is an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with Tamko, but we install and repair their shingle lines regularly, alongside GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko’s most common residential shingle lines in San Francisco are Heritage, Heritage Woodgate, Heritage Premium, and the older Elite series. The Heritage line is the one we see most often on single-family homes from the Sunset District up through the Richmond and into the central neighborhoods. Heritage Woodgate has a deeper shadow line and a slightly different keyway spacing, which matters when you are matching a patch on a visible slope.
Here is the compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: Tamko changed the width of Heritage shingles over the years. Newer Heritage shingles measure 39-3/8 inches wide with a 5-5/8 inch exposure. Some pre-2010 Tamko Heritage shingles were a touch narrower. That means a patch can look right from the curb but leave a seam that does not line up when you stand on a ladder and look at the course lines. We measure the existing shingle before we match it, so the repair lines up clean.
If you have a bundle left over from the original install, check the wrapper for the series name and the lot number printed on the side. The lot number helps match color. Sun and fog fade shingles over time, so even the correct product can look slightly different if the lot is different. We account for that when we do a repair. OEM Tamko shingles are our default for visible slopes. For a low-slope or flat section nobody sees, a quality aftermarket match can save money without sacrificing performance. We will tell you which makes sense and put the price on paper either way.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules collecting in the gutter or downspout. Tamko shingles shed mineral granules as they age, but a heavy buildup in one downspout usually means one slope is failing faster than the rest. The granules are the UV protection. Once they are gone, the asphalt underneath bakes and cracks.
- Curling at the corners or along the edges. San Francisco’s daily fog cycle wets shingles overnight and the afternoon sun dries them out. That repeated expansion and contraction causes older Tamko shingles to lift at the corners first. Curled corners catch wind, and wind peels them back.
- Bare fiberglass showing through. When you can see the glass mat under the colored granules, the shingle is at end of life. There is no coating left to protect it. This shows up most often on south-facing and west-facing exposures.
- Shingles sliding out of the tab pattern. If the tab slots are no longer aligned in a row, the shingles have shifted. That happens when the seal strip fails and the shingle is no longer bonded to the one below it. A shifted shingle is an open invitation for wind-driven rain.
- Water staining on the ceiling after fog, not just heavy rain. San Francisco gets more sustained wetness from fog drip than from downpours. A slow leak from a failed shingle often shows up as a small yellow-brown stain that appears over days, not right after a storm.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Tamko shingle repair in San Francisco runs roughly $425 to $650 for a small patch of three to six shingles. A larger repair involving ten to fifteen shingles, or a repair that also requires replacing felt or synthetic underlayment, typically runs $700 to $1,150. If the repair is near a valley, chimney, or wall flashing, the price goes to the higher end because the flashing work must be redone properly or the leak comes back.
Every Brennan Roofing estimate is a written, line-item price before any work starts. The price does not move at the door. The number you sign is the number you pay. The Repair includes matching Tamko shingles, the correct roofing nails, sealant, and haul-away of the old material. If the deck underneath is rotted, we will show you before we touch it and give you a price for the extra work in writing.
All repair work is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That means the repair is guaranteed in writing for one full year. If it fails within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No re-inspection fee, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
Here is the honest split. You can safely inspect your Tamko shingles from the ground with binoculars, and you can check the attic for daylight or water staining after a foggy night. You should not get on a San Francisco roof to do a shingle repair. Most roofs here are steeper than they look from the street, and the combination of morning dampness, moss, and worn granules makes the surface slick. A fall from a two-story roof is a life-changing injury, and the money saved on a DIY repair does not come close to covering that risk.
Walk a flat roof from a safe interior access point if you have one, and only if the surface is dry and you have a helper with a phone. But for a steep or cut-up roof, leave it to a crew that does this every week. We bring the right ladder setup, the right safety gear, and a background-checked, uniformed technician to every job. Call us at (831) 318-8819 and we will give you a written repair price before any work begins.
FAQs
Tamko Heritage shingles in San Francisco typically last 18 to 25 years, which is less than the manufacturer’s ideal-condition rating because of the constant fog moisture and salt exposure. Coastal-adjacent neighborhoods like the Sunset and Richmond see more rapid granule loss. If your roof is 15 years old and showing granules in the gutter, plan for repairs now and a full replacement budget in the next few years. Call (831) 318-8819 for an inspection and a straight answer.
Yes. A single missing, cracked, or curled Tamko shingle can almost always be repaired without replacing the roof. The exception is when the deck underneath is rotted or the shingle failure is so widespread that patching would become more expensive than a full reslope. We will tell you which situation you are in, and the inspection is free with an estimate.
Most Tamko shingle repairs in San Francisco take one to two hours on the roof, plus setup and cleanup. Typical total visit time is a half day or less. If the repair requires underlayment replacement or flashing work, it may take a full day. You will know the timeline before we start, in writing.
We stock common Tamko Heritage colors and widths on the truck, along with Tamko Hip & Ridge and starter components. If your specific color or lot is not on hand, we source it from our local San Francisco supplier, usually within one to two business days. The estimate will reflect exact turnaround before you commit to anything.
If you have a Tamko shingle that has failed and you want a straight answer on what it will cost to fix, call Brennan Roofing Co San Francisco at (831) 318-8819. We answer the phone with a live person, every time, day or night, and the estimate is free. A good roof should not need to be talked about. It should just hold. If it is not holding, it is time to do something about it.
