GAF Shingle Repair: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
GAF shingle repair in San Francisco typically costs $340 – $690 for a standard field repair addressing 8 – 15 damaged or missing shingles, and most jobs are completed the same day we arrive. We keep a rolling stock of GAF Timberline HDZ and Timberline Natural Shadow shingles on our trucks along with matching hip-and-ridge caps, so we’re not sending someone to a supply house while your roof sits open. The way most San Francisco homeowners find out they need us is the classic fog-belt sequence: a winter storm tears a few shingles loose on the windward side, then the next three months of damp air does the real damage to the underlayment underneath.
If you’re reading this because you spotted granules in your gutter or a shingle tab curled back after a storm, you’re in the right place. If you’re reading this because water is already in the living room, skip ahead and call (831) 318-8819 now.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
The repair procedures and pricing here apply to the GAF product lines we see most often on San Francisco roofs: Timberline HDZ (the current standard architectural shingle), Timberline Natural Shadow (the discontinued but very common predecessor), Timberline Ultra HD, and the Royal Sovereign 3-tab line still found on older Sunset and Richmond District homes. If your roof has GAF Slateline or Camelot shingles (the heavier, slate-look products), the material cost runs higher and we’ll quote accordingly.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: GAF changed the exposure and nail-line geometry on Timberline HDZ compared to older Timberline lines, and the color blends shifted slightly too. That means a bundle of “Weathered Wood” bought five years ago won’t always match a bundle of “Weathered Wood” bought today, and the nail strip sits in a different place. A repair that just slaps new shingles over old ones without accounting for this can look patchy and leak at the seam. We match both the color family and the shingle geometry, and if an exact match isn’t possible, we’ll tell you that before we quote, not after we’re on the roof.
The OEM versus aftermarket question for GAF is simpler than people expect. For shingle replacement, you want genuine GAF or a manufacturer-approved equivalent because the wind warranty and seal-strip chemistry matter. For accessories like starter strips, ridge caps, and leak barriers, we use GAF’s own Seal-A-Ridge, WeatherBlocker, and StormGuard lines when the roof warrants them. We’re an independent service provider, not a GAF dealer or affiliate, so our recommendation is based on what holds up on San Francisco roofs, not on moving a particular product line.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters and downspouts. GAF shingles lose surface granules as they age, but a sudden increase after a storm usually means the fiberglass mat has been exposed and the shingle is in accelerated decline. You’ll see what looks like coarse black sand piling up at the gutter seams.
- Curled or cupped shingle corners, especially on the south and west faces. In San Francisco, the sun and salt air work on shingles in a predictable pattern. Corner curling means the adhesive seal strip has failed and the shingle is lifting, which lets wind get underneath. Once one shingle curls, the ones around it start working loose too.
- Missing tabs after a wind event. A GAF shingle that’s properly sealed should survive 60 mph gusts. If tabs are tearing off in a 30 mph winter storm, the seal strips were already shot, and the rest of that roof face is one good blow away from the same fate.
- Bare fiberglass showing through. Once you can see the woven mat under the granules, that shingle is done. There’s no patching a shingle that’s lost its top layer. On steep San Francisco slopes, this tends to show first at the eaves and rakes where runoff concentrates.
- Water staining on the underside of roof sheathing or around rafter tails. By the time a shingle failure shows up inside the house, it’s been leaking for longer than you’d guess. Staining means the underlayment has been saturated and the repair needs to include that layer, not just the visible shingles on top.

Here’s what we quote for GAF shingle repair work in San Francisco:
| Repair Scope | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Small field repair, 2 – 4 shingles | $340 – $460 |
| Medium field repair, 8 – 15 shingles | $460 – $690 |
| Ridge cap or hip shingle replacement (section) | $280 – $420 |
| Leak repair including underlayment and flashing work | $690 – $1,150 |
These ranges assume standard roof access and typical San Francisco roof pitches. What pushes a job to the top of the range: steep slopes requiring safety harnesses and roof brackets, three-story facades with ladder height issues, rotted decking that needs section replacement, or repairs in the middle of a complex valley. What pushes it down: single-story homes, easy access, and repair zones away from flashing and penetrations.
Every quote includes the shingles or caps, the sealant and fasteners, the nails, the disposal, and the labor. The price goes on paper before any work starts, and it doesn’t move at the door. If we open up the repair area and find rotted decking, we’ll show you a photo, give you the additional cost in writing, and get your okay before proceeding. Every GAF shingle repair we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee for one full year, with a free return visit at no charge if the repair fails within that period.
DIY or Call Us?
You can do a visual inspection from the ground with binoculars: look for missing tabs, curling corners, and granule trails on the roof surface. You can also clean the gutters and watch for granule buildup. That’s the safe, smart owner’s job, and it’ll tell you whether you need to call someone.
What we don’t recommend, especially in San Francisco, is getting on the roof yourself. Our roofs here are steep, often wet, and frequently covered in lichen or moss that’s slick as ice when damp, which is roughly always in the Richmond and Sunset districts. Shingle repair also requires knowing how GAF shingles seal: if you don’t get the nail placement right on the HDZ nail line, or you nail through the seal strip, you’ve just created a future leak. We’ve fixed plenty of DIY repairs that failed within a season and ended up costing more than the original job would have. If you’ve spotted damage and want an honest read on what needs doing now versus what can wait, call (831) 318-8819. Travis Oakley will tell you straight what he’d do if it were his roof.
A good roof shouldn’t need to be talked about, it should just hold. Until it doesn’t. Then it’s our problem, and we take that seriously.
FAQs
GAF Timberline architectural shingles typically last 20 – 25 years in San Francisco’s climate, though homes in the fog belt sometimes see seal-strip failure and surface granule wear in 15 – 18 years due to constant dampness and salt air. The Royal Sovereign 3-tab line on older homes usually shows significant wear by year 15. Call (831) 318-8819 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your roof needs repair or replacement after an inspection.
Yes, if the surrounding shingles still have life and the underlayment underneath is intact. We evaluate the failure area, check that the seal strips around the repair zone are still functioning, and only recommend a full replacement when the damage is widespread or the roof is near the end of its service life. The written estimate will show both the repair cost and, if warranted, what a replacement would run so you can decide with real numbers.
Most field repairs on a standard San Francisco home take 2 – 4 hours from setup to cleanup, and we’ll have it done the same day. The price you approve is the price you pay, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing for a full year.
Yes, we keep Timberline HDZ and Natural Shadow colors that match the most common San Francisco roofs, plus Seal-A-Ridge caps and StormGuard leak barriers, on our service vehicles. If your home has a less common GAF color or line, we’ll source the exact match and schedule the repair once it’s in hand. Call (831) 318-8819 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you whether we can match your shingles same-day.
